Today’s premiere Fire Track comes from Fox Apts. The band calls California home and is comprised of lead singer Dave Kajganich, guitarist and bassist Jerry Popiel, and drummer Tom Stickley. Fire Track “Roaring Spring” has a great dark stomp to it as it rides a balance of indie rock and folk. You can hear the band brood with a deeper vocal reminiscent of Nick Cave and a dark Gothic Americana intensity of the now classic 16 Horsepower. This track is from their debut album, Omen, which is officially released today!
Omen was written in a very real (and demonstrably haunted) room with an old stone fireplace and oddly superior acoustics. The band headed to North Carolina to record the album at The Fidelitorium under the legendary producer Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Velvet Crush, Pavement). The band wanted Omen to be stitched through with an appreciation for the darker threads of American roots music—murder ballads and apocalypse songs, with their flash floods and ghost kids and killers on the road—but with a decidedly ‘80s sonic palette from some of the band’s long-standing alt-rock influences. It is a mix that creates moments across the album that feel sampled from the soundtracks of psychological horror films from decades past.
Omens features some notable musical guests from both the alt rock and roots worlds including Pete Holsapple, Matt Douglas, Jeffrey Dean Foster, Chris Stamey, and Rex McGee. If you like what you hear above you can order the album HERE.
