SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE has released two new songs from their forthcoming album, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING, out August 23rd via Saddle Creek. “SOMETHING’S ENDING” is an atmospheric and peaceful set up to the quietly menacing “I’VE BEEN EVIL” accented with bleary-eyed guitars and hushed vocals. The song arrives with a video that features the two songs. Directed by Kelsea Dakota Larson and filmed in rural Appalachia the director notes “My collaborator and spouse Jim and I have been waiting for the right project to film here in rural Appalachia since we moved a few years ago, when we heard these new tracks, we knew this was the right one. We took the titles literally, and wanted to highlight the darkness that can be right under your nose in a beautiful little mountain town, or anywhere really, while outsiders carry on.” The song follows “LET THE VIRGIN DRIVE,” a genuinely frightening pop track that anchors itself on Japanese City pop samples and a demented news clip of someone screaming.
Softer around the edges than their past, more angular work, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING is generational, an album as emotionally wrought as it is sonically progressive. Their last release, 2023’s i’m so lucky EP, explored the breakup between Zack Schwartz and Rivka Ravede, setting the stage and emotional territory for the band’s fifth record, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING. This latest offering is the most crystallized version of the band’s aesthetic, a continued meditation on the end of relationships and the unsteadiness that follows. It is a meticulous, beautiful, and quietly heartbreaking collection of songs.
Four vinyl variants will be available on street date, including the “derelict house” variant that is bundled with two numbered art prints from Rivka Ravede of SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE, available exclusively from Saddle Creek and limited to 500 copies.
