Hovvdy
Arts & Crafts [2024]
Album Overview: Hovvdy, comprising Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, emerged in 2014 as a vital presence in the Austin indie scene. They melded separate songwriting sketches into a cohesive vision and continue to grow with each record. The duo’s exploratory catalog earned them a quiet favorite status among fans. Hovvdy’s self-titled album marks their fifth release, showcasing years of hyper-reflective songwriting. The 19-track sequence explores familial bonds, tested relationships, and lifelong imprints. The album sees a shift in songwriting perspective, as it dives into a more vulnerable place as the duo’s creative maturation continues to evolve. The record features expansive production and a focus on live takes, capturing the dynamic range of Hovvdy’s sound.
Musical Style: Hovvdy’s musical style is full of swirling piano lines, vivid production, and has a comfortable, timeless feel. Their sound combines elements of indie, folk, and slowcore, creating a record that feels intimate yet expansive. Their melodies is what really grabs you and even though this record is almost an hour long, its 19 tracks never lag and give the group room to move around and push to the edges of their soft indie rock boundaries.
Evolution of Sound: This self-titled album represents a progression in Hovvdy’s sound, with a focus on broader songwriting themes and more vulnerable scenes. The duo experiments with new techniques and collaborated in a true co-production between the band, Andrew Sarlo (Bon Iver, Big Thief), and Bennett Littlejohn (bassist, multi-instrumentalist). The shift here in not only that Hovvdy used programmed drums and electronic runs but it is how they blended those new avenues into the current road they have been traveling. This additional musical support gives this album the most depth we have heard from the band.
Artists with Similar Fire: Hovvdy fall into a similar line with Bon Iver, Big Thief, The Lemon Twigs and Alex G, who share similar indie sensibilities and a knack for introspective songwriting. Hovvdy’s blend of timeless warm melodies and heartfelt lyrics will connect with listeners who appreciate authentic, emotive music.
Pivotal Tracks: “Bad News” near the end of the album is a nice upbeat foot tapper that has a slightly different angle for the band that really works as their vocal interplay will quickly grab your ear. “Make Ya Proud” is a fantastic song that Martin wrote about his grandpa Pete that passed away last summer as it is a true celebration of him with some very connecting lyrics that any listener can relate to. “Forever” is a great sounding Hovvdy track that floats with their harmonizing vocals.
Lyrical Strength: Hovvdy’s lyrics cover a wide array of themes and showcases their personal growth as songwriters. Their ability to convey vulnerability and emotional depth should resonate with listeners and makes listening to all 19 tracks worth the time.
