Wussy
Wussy
Shake It Records [2009]
Wussy are one of Cincinnati’s best-kept secrets, and they have just released their self-titled third album, Wussy, which continues the group’s successful formula of guy/gal indie rock, led by former Ass Pony Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker. Track after track, they tear it up. What’s solidified on Wussy is that they are now a fully realized band, with every chord, harmony, and beat in perfect cohesion. This leads to smooth transitions and even catchier tracks. The balance between Walker and Cleaver has also grown, as no matter who takes the lead on vocals, the other complements them seamlessly. Wussy never suffers from the split leads—you can always tell it’s the same band. Their natural sound shines, with Walker belting out powerful vocals and Cleaver offering his soft, early Michael Stipe-like voice alongside his intriguing storytelling.
For production, they returned to another local, John Curley (Afghan Whigs), who knows them inside out and helped achieve the right mix. Wussy is a band brimming with talent. From the upbeat rocker “Happiness Bleeds” to the sing-along chorus in “Magic Words,” and all the way to the quiet, perfect Walker-led closer “Las Vegas,” the record is sure to please even the pickiest indie fan.
