Wussy
Strawberry
Shake It Records [2011]
Former Ass Pony Chuck Cleaver and his partner-in-crime, songwriter/co-vocalist Lisa Walker, return with Wussy’s fourth album, Strawberry. This album offers another infectious batch of 11 songs, alternating lead vocals between Cleaver and Walker, while the rest of the band backs up each singer with note-for-note precision.
You might expect Wussy to mellow with age, but Strawberry proves their jangly indie rock style is timeless. The band sounds as fresh here as they did on their 2005 debut. Strawberry succeeds by pushing forward, with “Pulverized” standing out as one of the band’s most rocked-up tracks, while songs like “Chicken” and “Magnolia” showcase Walker’s expanding vocal range.
This winning dynamic continues throughout the record, culminating in the excellent six-minute closer “Little Miami,” which taps into a new emotional depth for a band already regarded as great, leaving listeners eager for more.
