Buffalo Killers
Dig. Sow. Love. Grow.
Alive Natural Sound Records [2012]
Right from the opening heavy blues rock of the first track, “Get It,” it’s clear that Cincinnati’s Buffalo Killers are back in full force on their fourth album, Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. The trio has quickly returned, releasing this record almost exactly a year after their previous album, 3 (2011). Fans will be pleased to know that the band brings their signature 70s vibe to the forefront once again, with the warm, catchy dual vocals of brothers Andy and Zachary Gabbard.
At first glance, this might sound similar to 3, but Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. shows a noticeable increase in confidence, structure, and groove. This newfound comfort in their sound becomes evident track after track. The biggest rocker on the record, “Get It,” delivers the line “I don’t need yo bitchin’ anymore” with attitude, while the slower “Farewell” avoids being labeled a ballad. Instead, the band adds a heavy, muscular guitar that gradually intensifies, only to be interrupted by quiet strumming at moments. This creates a unique and sophisticated dynamic that stands out on the track.
One of the album’s highlights is “Hey Girl,” the second track. Easily one of the band’s best songs to date, it flows seamlessly at a mid-tempo pace. The lyrics, “Hey girl, whatcha say? I’m with you all the way,” are relatable and instantly engage the listener. Its smooth instrumentation and the warm vocals, reminiscent of Stephen Stills or Matthew Sweet, make it a song you’ll find yourself singing along to before it’s even halfway through.
The rest of Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. follows a solid, consistent path, balancing tempo with swelling hooks, foot-tapping rhythms, strong basslines, and memorable vocal interludes. If you’re new to the band, Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. may not grab you on the first listen, but give it a proper chance, and it will surely grow on you. For existing fans, this album represents one of Buffalo Killers’ strongest efforts yet and could be the one to bring them the exposure they deserve.
